I am not a therapist. I do not have a license on the wall or a degree in psychology. What I have is 33 years of marriage — and the scars, breakthroughs, and hard-won lessons that come with it.
When my wife and I got married, we did not know how to talk to each other. Not really. We loved each other, sure. But love does not teach you how to handle the moment your partner walks in already upset, or how to say what you need without it sounding like a complaint, or how to fight without someone ending up on the couch.
The first few years were about getting to know and understand each other. Not just our likes and dislikes — our patterns. The way old wounds show up in new conversations. The way silence can be louder than words. The way being "right" can cost you the very thing you were trying to protect.
Then came decades of practice. Of getting it wrong, talking about it, and trying again. Of learning that connection is not something you find — it is something you build, one conversation at a time. Of discovering that the goal was never to stop fighting. It was to fight fair, repair fast, and come out closer on the other side.
Today, I can honestly say we have a fantastic marriage. My wife feels safe — emotionally, mentally, and physically. She knows I will listen before I fix. She knows I will stay in the conversation even when it is uncomfortable. She knows she is not alone in the room.
I did not write this book because I am an expert. I wrote it because I am someone who lived through the learning curve and came out the other side with something worth sharing. Every tool in this book came from a real conversation, a real mistake, and a real moment where something clicked.
If you are in the middle of that learning curve right now — I see you. It gets better. Not because you find the magic words, but because you keep showing up.
